I haven't done any ice fishing in area but I believe there is a ramp in Mitchells Bay, long walk out to deep enough water for perch fishing. Also a ramp at St Lukes, over 1 mile walk to get to deep enough water. They were most likley longnose gar, Lepisosteus osseus. Ive been fishing metro for years, and the only species of gar ive seen back there are the longnose. The spotted have a shorter snout, and slight differences in coloration.Same thing here. Launched at Harley and drifted in 12 FOW till we caught one then anchored. Ended up with a dozen 10 inchers. Fished from 7 till 11:30. Only had one smallie though. I haven't been perch fishing in years, man was that fun!
