The simplest approach resolving dwarven sleeping requirements is to have all your dwarves sleep in a large communal dormitory. The smallest bedroom design possible is a corridor with notched spaces for beds. Players frequently want designs which maximize positive thought and minimize the path distance between a dwarf's food, drink, job and home.
They will be happier in the long term if they have their own room with a door and places to store their stuff. you can also make bedrooms 1 square on the bed and assign a dwarf to that bed to see if that helps. Make sure to make a couple of these squares to create multiple rooms. Once you have set the space for the mining tool, you can now un-pause the game in order for the dwarves to start mining. The next step is to smoothen the walls by clicking the tool below.Once tavern is created you can add further rooms to it, such as a dormitory, bedrooms, dining room or more meeting halls. These need to be made separately then added to the tavern. Economy is currently disabled so you can't rent rooms to be exact, they simply squat in your designated tavern rooms.
Viewed 823 times. 1. I have a bedroom designated as a dormitory in my dwarves' fortress. The room has 7 beds, none of them assigned to anyone. Yet everyone is sleeping on the floor. In fact, at this time, there are seven dwarves in the dirt snoozing away. What's going on here?

Some of the old visualizers used to rotate displayed furniture based on the context (e.g. a chair next to a table would face the table, bed next to a wall would face away from the wall etc). They could probably add a feature like this at some point. This means a dining hall can make a perfectly fine tavern. One example of an exception is taverns assigned to bedrooms. Dwarves won't do the socializing functions of the tavern in a bedroom zone because it has its own tavern-specific function as an inn room (for guest residents).
